We were told that Lago D'Averno was a great place to walk the dog. So we set out one night to walk around this beautiful lake (about 2-3 km). The path is lined with vineyards and fruit trees, oleander bushes. A natural oasis and wildlife habitat. On the shoreline, we saw a Roman ruin. There was no mention of it anywhere, no plaque to explain what it was. We learned later that it is in fact the Temple of Apollo. WHAT? And if that wasn't enough, we found out that according to Roman mythology Lago D'Averno was considered the entrance to "The Underworld". Oh, and did I mention that it was also a volcanic crater. The things you stumble upon.....while walking the dog:)
