We are taught to believe that our modern lifestyle – which thrives on egoism, competition and inequality – is an improvement on the past. But considering the facts of the history of the human race, we may learn a thing or two from our egalitarian past. This article is the second part in a series investigating different ways of organizing human life on earth.
We are taught to believe that our modern lifestyle – which thrives on egoism, competition and inequality – is an improvement on the past. But considering the facts of the history of the human race, we may learn a thing or two from our egalitarian past. I recently read a very interesting article on this topic and would like to share it with you. It really is worth the read. Read it here.
I recently enjoyed a "Feuerzangenbowle" at the Duisburg Christmas market. What is it, you ask? It might well be one of the best inventions ever: A tiny sugar cone is fastened to the rim of a cup that is filled with Gluehwein then rum is poured over it and the sugar cone is set on fire which causes the rum-soaked cone to melt and fall into your Gluehwein!
Gluehwein or Mulled Wine is something we Germans drink not only while visiting Christmas markets but also at home during the holiday season and on any other (cold) day. I'm often asked for a recipe, so here it is! Stay warm and enjoy! And if you do happen to have one (or two!) of these at a Christmas market, make sure you know which direction your Hotel is in! I can hardly believe that Christmas is almost here again and as this will be our first Christmas in Italy, I am trying to wrap my mind around the local customs. This article helped me understand some of them! One thing is for sure, the Christmas lights are spectacular, especially in Salerno. Have a look! Check out this interesting article in "The Local Italy" about the quality of life in different areas of Italy. I personally am very fond of the Abruzzo region (not mentioned here). A hidden gem that did not make it into the list of top 5 places to live.
Check out the stunning Swide.com photo gallery: "20 beautiful towns in Southern Italy". Here is one of my favourite photos from our visit to Cetara, a small town along the Amalfi coast.
I can see you cringe but don't worry, I will not tell you how to use a bidet according to the dictionary. I have found many practical ways of using it since we arrived in Italy. One of them is "plant propagation". Yup! I will stick plant clippings in a bidet filled with water and let them root there. Great for larger plants. Have a look at my "Papyrus" plant. I took a little clipping from the side of a road.
I just learned that the "lime" tree in our garden is in fact a mandarine tree! Oh well, you learn something new every day. While we are waiting for the rest of the mandarines to ripen, I had to do something creative with the green ones that had fallen off the tree. I did what any florist would do: I made arrangements! Let's just say, the house smells nice and fresh!
Today, as I was sitting on a quiet cobble stone street in Casertavecchia, a medieval village that lies at the foot of the Tifatini mountains, near the City of Caserta, I couldn't help myself but think about the people who might have walked these narrow streets before. Who were they, how did they live, why did they walk there? I will never know. When looking at these photos, you can let your mind wander to a time and place long ago, actually around 861 AD to be precise or you can simply read more here.. |
